Behind the Knots: The Beginning of Kinbaku Studio’s Story

When Kinbaku Studio first came to life, it wasn’t just about making rope — it was about carrying forward a legacy and filling a gap in the rope community.

More than10 years ago, I lost a dear friend who was my go-to rope maker. He crafted my last set of rope, and his work had been a constant in my tying journey. When he passed away from suicide, the loss was deeply personal — not only of a friend but also of someone who truly understood the craft.

At the time, I didn’t believe there was another rope maker offering both the quality and the fair pricing that he had. I was tying a lot in those days, going through rope quickly, and finding that much of what I purchased online had frustrating issues — high stranding, inconsistent twists, and colors that weren’t dyed all the way through.

So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I began experimenting, refining, and testing rope-making techniques until I could produce rope that met my own high standards. My goal was simple: make rope that I would be proud to tie with, at a quality and price that made it accessible for more people.

Our Vision Today

  • Craftsmanship First – Every strand of jute or hemp is inspected, processed, and finished by hand for performance and consistency.

  • Community Always – Rope should be accessible. We offer donations for those in need and host workshops for all skill levels.

  • Education Matters – We offer private classes both in-person and virtually, produce upcoming online tutorials, and bring world-class presenters to the U.S. We’re committed to helping you tie better, safer, and more creatively.

We’re excited to use Behind the Knots to share tips, guides, behind-the-scenes glimpses of our process, and spotlights on the people who inspire us. Expect knot tutorials, rope care advice, sneak peeks at new colors and hardware, and announcements for upcoming events.

If you’ve been part of our journey so far, thank you for supporting a small, passionate business. If you’re new here, welcome — we’re glad you found us.

Here’s to beautiful rope, beautiful ties, and the community we create together.

With rope marks,
Arthur
